If you’re serious about working on yachts, you need two certificates before applying for any job: the STCW Basic Safety Training and the ENG1 Seafarer’s Medical. Here’s what they are and how to get them.
1. What Is the STCW?
STCW stands for “Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping.” It’s a five-day training course covering fire fighting, sea survival, first aid, and personal safety.
- Cost: Around €800–€1,200
- Valid for: 5 years
- Where: Training centres in Antibes, Palma, Cape Town, Fort Lauderdale, etc.
2. What Is the ENG1 Medical?
The ENG1 is a medical certificate issued by an MCA-approved doctor. It confirms you’re fit to work at sea.
- Cost: Around £100–£150
- Valid for: 2 years
- Where: Must be done by an MCA-certified doctor (check the official list)
3. Can I Do These Before I Arrive in a Yachting Hub?
Yes. Many crew do their STCW and ENG1 before flying to Antibes or Fort Lauderdale. It’s cheaper in some countries, and you’ll arrive ready to work immediately.
4. What Happens If I Don’t Have These?
Unfortunately, you won’t be able to work legally on yachts—period. Captains will not consider you, and agencies will reject your application automatically.
🧭 Pro tip: Book these early. Training spots can fill up fast before the Mediterranean and Caribbean seasons begin.
