Breaking into the Superyacht industry may seem daunting at first, especially if you’ve never stepped on a yacht before. But the truth is: most crew started exactly where you are. Here’s how to make your first move and get noticed—even with zero experience.

1. Understand the Role You’re Aiming For

The two most common entry-level positions are Deckhand and Stewardess. Deckhands work outside, handling watersports gear, cleaning, and assisting with lines. Stewardesses focus on interior service, housekeeping, and guest care. Decide which one suits your strengths.

2. Get Your Mandatory Certifications

Every crew member, regardless of role, needs STCW Basic Safety Training and a valid ENG1 medical certificate. Without these, you won’t be considered.

3. Build a Strong CV – and Keep It to One Page

Your yacht CV should be visual, clean, and relevant. Remove corporate fluff. Highlight transferrable skills (hospitality, team sports, customer service). Add a passport-style photo and list your location and availability clearly.

4. Be in the Right Location

If you can afford it, go to yachting hubs like Antibes, Palma, or Fort Lauderdale during the hiring season. Walk the docks, network at crew houses, and keep your phone close for last-minute daywork calls.

5. Register With Reputable Crew Agencies

Some trusted names include Bluewater, YPI Crew, and Quay Crew. Always keep your profiles up to date, and check in weekly.

6. Stay Professional and Patient

Yachting can be competitive—but your attitude matters as much as your skills. Be humble, eager to learn, and polite. First impressions count, whether it’s online or in person.
